Former Manchester City captain Richard Dunne says Sunday’s game against Liverpool is “massive” and hopes it will have a significant impact on the race for the Premier League title.
Defending champions and current league leaders Liverpool travel to Etihad, live Sky Sports Premier League, which already has a five-point advantage over City.
Pep Guardiola’s team is currently 10th in the table after an inconsistent start to the campaign, but Dunne believes his former club will have the belief that they can move on and regain the title if they win this weekend.
“It’s huge. This game almost decides the season. The two teams haven’t lost many games in recent years, so they know the importance of the three points in this one is huge,” Dunne said. Sky Sports News.
“City come into play after beating Liverpool 4-0 last year, but they will know that this was not the real Liverpool, they had already finished the league by then.
“It’s going to be very competitive. I think for City, and also for Liverpool, they will understand how great it is. They will understand that everything so far has been a kind of warm-up for this game.
“It is not just the result of a game this weekend, this could change the championship and this could give you the confidence to go out for a run and try to build an advantage, or that City catch up with Liverpool.
“The players will be really willing to do it and they will be looking forward to it. It has the makings of a great game.”
When asked if he expected his former club to win on Sunday, Dunne added: “City need to win. They are a few points behind Liverpool and I like the weekends.”
“I think he’s in good shape, Liverpool have a couple of defensive problems and I would like City to take advantage of that.”
Questions remain as to whether City forward Sergio Agüero will recover from a thigh injury in time for the game, although Gabriel Jesus will be available after coming off the bench to score against Olympiakos in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Makeshift center forward Ferran Torres opened the scoring in a 3-0 win over the Greek side, and Dunne believes the Spaniard could keep his place against Liverpool.
“I was very impressed that Torres plays as a center forward,” he added.
“They signed him to play on the wing, but through the circumstances he ended up in a central position. The way he has been playing has been very positive for the team.
“He’s been stretching the defenses from behind and giving them different options. I wouldn’t be surprised if Torres was the starter.
“Having Aguero back would be great and Jesus came back with that goal. Even if you have them both in reserve to enter at some point in the game, he is a real threat to Liverpool.
“I just think that Torres’ physical form and pace indicates that he will start this weekend.”
