The government has hinted at the level of restrictions that will apply after the shutdown ends.

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly told the Oireachtas Health Committee yesterday that he will seek to implement the “minimal additional restrictions” necessary to keep the spread of Covid-19 low.

He said this can only be achieved if “we all follow the basics” of public health advice and guidance.

Stephen Donnelly also revealed that the number of breeders in Ireland is less than 1, and is now between 0.7 and 0.9.

The key metric shows roughly how many other people are infected with an average case of Covid-19.

Donnelly told the Health committee that the decision to move to the Level Five lockdown last month was made due to a rapid increase in new cases.

The Fianna Fail TD also added that there were some positive signs that the new measures could be working.

The 14-day incidence rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 residents is now 212 nationally, compared to 278 in the previous two weeks.

And Donnelly added that the incidence rate is currently falling in 23 of the 26 counties.
