Ole Gunnar Solksjaer has claimed that poor defense was to blame for Manchester United’s surprising loss to Istanbul Başakşehir.
The Red Devils were two goals behind in the first half after a torrid start to play. Former Chelsea and Newcastle United player Demba Ba opened the scoring thanks to a huge defensive error.
The forward was allowed to run towards goal after he went unmarked at the top. He escaped before Edin Visca doubled the Turkish team’s lead in the 40th minute.
F365 says: Sorry, excuses are the only ones left for Solskjaer …
Anthony Martial got United back into play with a header just before half-time. They would have hoped to complete their comeback in the second half, but the score remained 2-1.
This is Man Utd’s first defeat in the Champions League this season, adding to the mounting pressure on Solksjaer.
After the game, the Man Utd boss told BT Sport, quoted by BBC Sport, that the defense of Istanbul’s first goal was “unforgivable.”
“The performance was not good enough against a team that worked and ran and hit us at halftime a couple of times. He scored two goals like you do in Europe when you don’t defend well enough.
“The first is that we play a short corner and forget about the man upstairs. That is unforgivable. The second also, we are not very well organized to counter the press.
“Two hard goals to give away and then we didn’t have enough to come back in the second half. Anthony Martial scored a good goal but in the second half we threw everything at him and we couldn’t take them down.
“We are a team and we all have a responsibility. We can play much better.
“I had a feeling [after Anthony Martial goal] and there was a lot of room to play and create but we didn’t create many opportunities.
“For them, it is a very nice victory and for us very disappointing. We need to improve a lot.
“We are Man United and we have to improve. The previous games against Arsenal we did not play our best game. Now we have to face Everton ”.
There are no representatives from Arsenal, Chelsea or Manchester City in our roundup of the top ten players of the season. Not Manchester United, of course, but is Jay Rodriguez coming in ?!
