Tomás Ó Sé has questioned Sligo GAA’s decision to withdraw from Saturday’s Connacht Senior Football Championship semifinal against Galway, claiming it calls into question the integrity of the competition.
The Sligo team has been affected by a Covid-19 outbreak, with seven positive tests on Monday and other team members unavailable due to being considered close contacts.
The Sligo County Board issued a statement Tuesday night confirming its decision to withdraw from the Galway confrontation and informing the GAA of its “regrettable but correct decision.”
However, former Kerry All-Ireland winner and Sunday Game analyst Tomás Ó Sé believes the Sligo board may have acted in a hurry and expressed concern about the effects its decision has on the integrity of the competition.
Ó Be tweeted: “Very disappointing Sligo has withdrawn from the championship. I would love to know the exact situation that has led to this. Is it 11 players or more?”
Ó Be pointed out to other counties that have also been affected by Covid-19. Fermanagh lined up a team against Clare last month despite losing a large amount from his panel due to positive testing and close contacts, while Leitrim conceded his Division 3 game against Down.
He wrote: “Leitrim and Longford are in trouble. We never found the exact details of Leitrim’s situation. Fermanagh, who has 18 missing players, made his match at Ennis so that it can be done.
“I’m not downplaying this, but the integrity of the competition is being questioned now. Galway has been thrown into a terrible situation. Potentially 3 games to win an All-Ireland?
“Why do all the weaker counties seem to be upset with this? Does it suit them?”
