Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he will “always listen” to former Manchester United teammate Roy Keane, but disagrees with his claim that the current team is “not good enough”.
Following United’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal on Sunday, Keane said: “Ole will lose his job working with these players, that’s what’s going to happen.”
United have lost three of their first six Premier League games, but Solskjaer insists he has full faith in his team to turn things around.
“Roy has always been frank. I am very happy to have the players that I have here with us,” Solskjaer said, before Wednesday’s game in Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League.
“We have different jobs. Roy’s job is to give his opinion. I always listen to Roy but here we move forward with a great group of players, a strong group of players.
“I’m sure we will see an answer.”
Keane also criticized United for the lack of leaders in the loss to Arsenal, but the club’s captain, Harry Maguire, insists there is a strong leadership group at Old Trafford.
“I can say that I have not seen your comments, but we do not look at what is happening, especially after a negative result,” Maguire said.
“We don’t bring negativity to the scene. We stay positive.
“I can safely say that there are many leaders in the team. I am the captain and I also have a lot of leadership around me, staff and players.
“So sure, there are a lot of leaders on this team.”
United’s poor form at home stands in stark contrast to their impressive start to the Champions League this season.
Solskjaer’s team has already beaten Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig in Group H and next Wednesday they will face the group fund Istanbul Basaksehir in the Turkish capital.
Solskjaer believes that recent victories in Europe show that he has a team capable of fighting for honors.
“These two results show the quality we have, but we are not going to get too far ahead,” he said.
“We look forward to the next game and we continue to work to achieve that consistency because at our best, we can beat anyone. This is how we have to go into every game.”
Wednesday’s game will be played in front of a small group of fans at Fatih Terim Stadium due to coronavirus restrictions and Solskjaer believes the lack of local support could be an advantage for his team.
“I think football is really affected by the virus now and the environment is not like it normally is,” he added.
“Away games against any opponent … in Turkey you have fanatical fans, passionate fans, enthusiastic fans, and of course having the local fans with you is an advantage. That is proven.”
