Gardaí has launched an investigation after protesters took part of a tram in Dublin and told passengers to remove their masks.
The incident took place this afternoon on the Red Luas line near Heuston station, following a demonstration by anti-mask protesters.
Luas operator Transdev said it has broadcast high-quality CCTV to gardaí to assist in the investigation.
In a statement issued tonight, An Garda Síochána said that Gardaí attended a protest that started at the Garden of Remembrance and moved to the HSE office at Dr. Steevens Hospital in Dublin 8 on Monday afternoon.
“A Garda Síochána will investigate this matter and the advice of the Director of the Public Ministry will be sought with respect to any other action taken,” he said.

“Gardaí is aware of the videos circulating on social media that show various people on public transportation not complying with public health regulations,” he said.

Gardaí said that under the legislation governing the use of face covers in public transportation, the regulations establish the enforcement powers of “relevant persons” that do not include members of the force.
“An Garda Síochána members can only act after a report or complaint from a ‘relevant person’ has been made,” he said.
“The regulations also provide a ‘reasonable excuse’ for not covering your face,” he added.
Luas operator Transdev said there are only limited exceptions to the law requiring the use of face covers on public transportation.
