Several people were injured in central Vienna amid exchanges of gunfire, police said on Twitter, and local media reported that a synagogue had been attacked.

A police officer was shot and seriously injured and one person was arrested, the APA news agency said, citing the Interior Ministry.
The editor of the Falter newspaper said that one person had been killed, and also cited the Interior Ministry, which was not immediately available for comment.
A police spokesman previously confirmed that a large police deployment was taking place in central Vienna.
The Kronen Zeitung newspaper reported that a synagogue had been attacked. He and other outlets reported shooting in the area of a nearby square, Schwedenplatz.
Jewish community leader Oskar Deutsch said on Twitter that it was unclear whether the Vienna synagogue and adjacent offices had been the target of an attack, saying they were closed at the time.
There is a larger police operation in Vienna’s 1st district (downtown area). The officers are on the scene and verify the situation. We keep you informed about the matter.
