John Oxx, coach of the all-time great Sea The Stars, closed his marvelous career at the Curragh on Monday when he dispatched his last runners.
Oxx, one of the sport’s most admired and respected operators, announced last month that it would renounce its license at the end of the 2020 campaign and that chapter concluded after the 7f maiden for foals and geldings.
However, it was not a fairy tale ending, as Earlswood was the best of his three rivals, finishing third in a race won by Arturo Toscanini, trained by Aidan O’Brien. Curraghglass finished eighth, while Safecracker was 14 of the 17 participants.
The 70-year-old, ending his 41 years as a coach for retirement, said: “Not much to say, but they are my last runners, so I’ll get out quick and go home for lunch!

“They ran well and Earlswood, who finished third, is a good horse who ran well here the first time and then pulled too hard at Leopardstown, so we wanted to bring him back and teach him, and have a more polite performance, which I think he produced, which I think he produced. .
“I thought he was coming to win, but he got tired on the ground. They are three good horses that ran well and hopefully we will hear about them next year.”
Oxx, champion coach crowned in 1995, sent 33 top flight winners but will be most remembered for his excellent handling of Sea The Stars, which illuminated 2009 by winning the 2,000 Guineas, Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. along with victories in Eclipse, International and Irish Champion Stakes.
The seasoned Oxx also completed the Derby-Arc double with Sinndar in 2000 and has no regrets.
“The die is cast,” he added. “That’s it. We are looking forward and will continue to look now. We have been very lucky and have had a great race.
“We have no complaints about how life turned out, but there comes a time to stop. We have been thinking about it for a few years and the more we think about it, the happier we are.
“I will miss the people, the chat and the communication, and I will do some things for the people. I will not be too busy, but I will be busy enough, I hope, and they will see me at the Razas.”
Oxx, whose stables are based on the Curragh training grounds, also won the Breeders’ Cup Mile in 1995 with the Ridgewood Pearl and a King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes double thanks to Alamshar (2003) and Azamour (2005).
