A total of € 15 million has been allocated to the Gaelic Games with funding announced today by Sport Ireland, in addition to a similar amount already reserved to run the championship this year.
The GAA clubs will receive € 5 million, the LGFA will receive € 1 million and the Camogie Association will see its coffers increased by € 795,000.
The association itself has received 9 million euros to help cope with financial difficulties.
With the 15 million euros to run the championship already allocated, it means that Gaelic Games will benefit from almost 31 million euros from state support this year.
Rugby will receive € 18 million to address all aspects of the game, including issues facing the IRFU, the provinces and the club network.
Football will receive 13 million euros through the FAI, which includes a limited amount to support the clubs.
Earlier this year, the Government announced € 70 million funding to protect Ireland’s national sports system, with today’s announcement of an additional € 15.5 million and detailing where all the money is being allocated.
Sport Ireland’s funding will help address the threat to its club’s governing bodies and networks and enable planning for 2021.
The aim is for funding to reach all levels of the sports sector, with governing bodies, local sports associations and thousands of grassroots clubs across Ireland who will benefit.
An emergency fund of € 5.8 million has been allocated to compensate for losses suffered by sports organizations during the current Level 5 restrictions and the remaining period of 2020.
Sport Ireland has complied with requests from the governing bodies for its club networks for an amount of € 9.7 million, enabling an additional € 5 million to be invested in the GAA, IRFU and FAI club networks.
Sport Ireland President Kieran Mulvey said the funding shows how important it is for sport to be valued.
He stated: “The funding being allocated today will bring relief to funded bodies and clubs. It will provide much needed financial stability across the industry and has given organizations the confidence to continue to operate in these difficult times.
“The funding recognizes the broader economic and social impact of sport and the significant costs derived from the real threat of insolvency for sporting bodies.
“The needs of the disability sector were specifically addressed with a dedicated group that was established to examine any particular issues arising during the Covid-19 pandemic – this has been recognized in our funding allocations.
“While the circumstances are unfortunate, Sport Ireland’s investment in 2020 is the largest investment package ever for the sport.
“The recent budget announcement of the [Government] It has reinforced that sense of confidence that support is available and we look forward to working with our funded agencies to address their needs in 2021. “
A large number of governing bodies issued statements this afternoon expressing gratitude for the support.
IRFU Executive Director Philip Browne said: “The funding for rugby announced today by the Government and Sport Ireland is critical for IRFU to sustain rugby activities at all levels of our sport for now for the many men, women and children participating in or volunteering in clubs week after week and for our provincial and international teams. “
Basketball Ireland received 1.2 million euros in funding for the federation and member clubs, describing it as “a shot in the arm” from its manager, Bernard O’Byrne.
Golf Ireland’s Mark Kennelly added: “Irish Golf appreciates the allocation of € 2.7 million in funding that will support clubs that have been severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. This substantial allocation underlines the important role of golf in the sports panorama of the country.
“It will be a very welcome addition to the € 597,000 we allocated to clubs last week under the R&A Covid-19 Fund.”
FAI Acting CEO Roy Barrett said the funding “will make a significant difference in Irish football.”
