Transportation bosses urge people to be prepared for the surge in riders as schools return

Transportation bosses are urging people to be prepared for an expected surge in ridership on public transportation when schools return tomorrow.

The National Transportation Authority has warned passengers to only use public transportation if absolutely necessary.

Public transport capacity is restricted to 25% under Level 5 restrictions, which “has caused some services to come under heavy pressure and passengers are left behind.”

And the problem is especially serious in the morning and in Dublin.

Anne Graham, executive director of the NTA, said: “The return of schools on Monday is likely to create additional pressure.

“We are eager to ensure that customers are aware of the situation.

“NTA is asking people to avoid rush hour travel and only use public transportation for essential purposes.

“Nobody wants to see a situation where essential workers, like those on the front lines of medical care, cannot get on a bus.

“We continue to encourage people to walk or bike whenever possible. Customers who have no alternative to public transportation should expect their trip to be longer and plan ahead accordingly.

“Drivers and other public transportation personnel are working in a very challenging environment, and customers must respect them at all times.

“And of course wear a face cover when using public transportation.”
