Jacob Stockdale 4

A disastrous error led France to the penalty test, as their winger game was called into question. His huge left boot was regularly used as an exit strategy. The belated attempt was little consolation.

Andrew Conway 5

As he was last week, hungry for possession at all times, and he will be very sorry for missing the ball in the run-up to Ntamack’s try.

Robbie Henshaw 6

The shocking individual attempt typified an excellent performance, as the Athlone native was smart on defense and sharp on offense. A timely reminder of your game-breaking skill.

Bundee Aki 5

His decision to kick while deep in French territory proved very costly as the hosts soon came up the other side and scored a try. Booted shortly after.

Hugo Keenan 6

The bad luck of not having forced a penalty attempt after a wicked rebound fooled the winger. He stripped his socks off for the entire game and his discharge helped create Stockdale’s try.

Johnny Sexton 5

A smart clever kick could have led to a penalty try, but the captain’s decision not to take all three points at the edge of the break went awry. Furious when it is replaced late.

Conor Murray 5

Much less fluid is the best and he will not have been happy to cough up a cheap penalty shortly before the break. He tried to vary the point of attack, but it never clicked for him.

Cyan Healy 6

He scored his 100th match with a try and a rock-solid performance at scrum time. He passed an HIA in the first half before fighting back, but was unable to change course.

Rob Herring 4

He lacks power against the big boys, which is a concern going forward. A crucial missed lineout deep within the French 22 marked the end of his disappointing night.

Andrew Porter 5

An early scrum penalty put a score on as it contributed greatly to the strong set piece. He found himself on the edge, where no accessory wants to be, and was mercilessly exposed for Dupont’s attempt.

Tadhg Beirne 6

Another big change from Kildare’s man, as he went head-to-head with a French heavyweight pack. A constant threat in the breakdown where he won a couple of vital turnovers.

James Ryan 7

The best player in Ireland and with some distance. Immense lock change that set the tone with a couple of big hits early on. The smart latch helped Healy cross the line.

Caelan Doris 5

He won an excellent opening loss before spending ten minutes in the bin and conceding a penalty shot. I found it difficult to get into the game.

Will connors 5

Tireless effort again as the wide-back tried to take down France’s heavy hitters. He seemed to get more involved in the attack, but couldn’t make his mark.

CJ Stander 6

He won two turnovers penalties within two minutes of the second half and, as usual, was his team’s best keeper (13). He needed more help from those around him.

Andy Farrell 5

A rough night at the office for the technician whose equipment was shattered in the second half. A third place in his first Six Nations in charge with many questions still pending.
