In the end, Wexford offered little resistance when they gave up their Leinster SHC title, and manager Davy Fitzgerald lamented the fight they showed in the provincial semifinal at Croke Park.
A 13-point margin was what separated the sides at GAA headquarters, though within 20 minutes it was level, before a Brian Concannon goal gave the tribe men the platform to move on. And while Galway’s lead was just six at the break, Wexford couldn’t move enough to get the game back in the second period.
Speaking to RTÉ Sport after the final whistle, the Wexford manager could not hide his frustration as he said: “We were absolutely terrible. All I can say to Wexford fans is that I am extremely disappointed in the way we performed.
“We showed no guts, no fight, no character. It’s extremely disappointing.
“Fair play for Galway, they were miles ahead of us and wanted it more than we did. In the three short years I’ve been here, we’ve never thrown in the towel so easily. It’s really disappointing, for me and me. Guys they will have to raise their hands, we were not in that “.
When asked to indicate why things were not going well, the Clare native simply had no response.
“We tried four different formations and two different styles of play, so many different things, but it didn’t matter. We just weren’t on the field.
“The conclusion of the launch is that if you want to win the game, you have to win the 50-50 and the tough battles. We didn’t do that. They blew us away, it doesn’t depend on anyone else. It depends on ourselves. For some reason we were flat.
“We had some scoring opportunities, but we didn’t take them. In the second half, Galway was sailing and doing what he wanted to do. I’m disappointed with the amount of fighting we had. That’s not good enough.”

Fitzgerald’s counterpart Shane O’Neill was understandably happy with what he saw, and praised the performance and pace of work as “absolutely excellent” when speaking to RTÉ Sport.
“That was something we aimed for. We wanted to do a performance, work really hard and see how it goes.”
And while he’s satisfied with his luck tonight, O’Neill is quickly turning his attention to a date with Kilkenny in the provincial final. “All our concentration is now on that game.”
