Tonight’s rare ‘blue moon’ will be the first full moon on Halloween in half a century

Today’s stormy weather ANSWERS will provide the perfect opportunity to see a ‘blue moon’ expected to appear in the sky tonight, aligning itself with Halloween for the first time in decades.

Met Éireann has issued an orange state wind warning for 12 counties today, with strong winds and rain hitting the country, but a storm may spell good news for moon enthusiasts.

Astronomy Ireland President David Moore said that once the stormy weather passes, people will have ample opportunity to catch a glimpse of the moon.

Talking to TheJournal.ieMoore said that because storms are generally short-lived, the sky clears and the moon will be easier to see.

“The storm will end early in the evening, which means that people will have 14 hours to see it, that is, from sunset Saturday night to sunrise Sunday morning.”

“This means that thousands of people across the country will be able to take a look, so we want to encourage everyone to try and take a photo, as there has not been a full moon on Halloween in most people’s lives.”

The full moon in tonight’s sky marks the first time a full moon has occurred on Halloween in Ireland since 1955, and no new one is expected on the spookiest night of the year until 2039.

It will be the second full moon of this calendar month, so it will be a “Blue Moon”.

Astronomy Ireland also pointed out that Uranus is close to the Moon that night as well, but cannot be seen (due to the full moon) with the naked eye or with binoculars. People are encouraged to submit their photos of the rare event for a future issue of Astronomy Ireland.
