Five deaths and 416 new cases reported

There have been 416 new cases of Covid-19 reported by the Department of Health and five additional deaths.

It brings the total number of Covid-related deaths to 1,913, while there have been a total of 61,456 cases.

There are 320 people being treated for the virus in hospital, and 41 of these patients are in intensive care units. This is one less than last night.

87 of the cases reported tonight are in Dublin, 62 in Cork, 41 in May and 37 in Galway. The remaining 189 cases are spread across 20 other counties.

64% of the cases involve people under the age of 45, while the average age of the positive cases reported today is 34 years.

The national incidence rate of 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants has been reduced to 268.7.

Medical Director Dr. Tony Holohan has said that we are “making progress in suppressing the current rise in Covid-19.”

He said that nationally our reproductive numbers “have dropped to about 1.0”.

Earlier, the Northern Ireland Department of Health said 11 people diagnosed with Covid-19 had died.

It means that 708 people with Covid-19 have died in Northern Ireland since the outbreak began.

An additional 649 new cases of the virus have also been confirmed.

There are 346 people in Northern Ireland hospitals with Covid-19, 48 of them in intensive care units.

Meanwhile, there have been no Covid-19 related deaths among healthcare workers in Ireland since July.

Eight people classified as health workers have died from the virus.

These deaths occurred between March and July, with the majority of the deaths occurring in April.

The HSE said it cannot provide a breakdown of these health workers by occupation for confidentiality reasons.

However, it is understood that none of these deaths occurred among nurses or midwives.

A report from the Health Protection Surveillance Center on October 23 indicated that there had been nine deaths among health workers.

This notification was reviewed and then no death was considered among this group.

The HSE says that as of October 28, a total of 10,504 cases of Covid-19 have been reported to the HPSC among healthcare workers.

Of these cases, 354 people or 3.4% were hospitalized with the virus.
