Phillip Schofield has said that he is still holding on to his longstanding marriage to Stephanie Lowe.

The This Morning host said their relationship is a “work in progress” but that he still wants to hold onto the only solid thing in his life which is family.

Phillip also said he didn’t know he was gay when they were married 27 years ago and that he never lived a lie.

This comes after Phillip revealed he was a gay man in an emotional interview earlier this year.

Phillip said, “When I knew, Steph knew.

“I would not have married if I had known then, it was absolutely not a factor and it was not in my head.

“My life was perfect; I had a wonderful career and a wonderful marriage.

“Steph and I are still holding as much as we can.”

Speaking on The Late Late Show, Ryan Tubridy asked him what exactly he was holding on to by staying married and wearing his wedding ring.

Phillip explained, “Love and family. It’s new, everything is very new. Everything is unsafe.

“We are, without a doubt, a work in progress. My whole life is a work in progress and my head is a work in progress.

“We love being together, so I hold the one solid thing that we all have in our lives: family.

“I hold on to dignity and if I could have done this without hurting anyone, that would be my absolute plan.”

The ITV star continued, “I hope everything I’ve done and the way I’ve done it has been sensitive and careful. And thoughtful and dignified. That’s what I’m holding on to.”

Phillip also recalled the moment when he issued the statement in which he told his fans about his sexuality.

He said: “I remember it very vividly, I had written my statement and was sitting in one of the makeup rooms with Holly.

“I had already told my friends in another post what I was going to do. And then my thumb was wobbling on my phone and I thought ‘When I press this, I really destroy my life and those around me.

Phillip drove 300 miles to Cornwall to tell his mother, who is in her eighties, the news.

He said: “She had already asked me months before, ‘Are you okay, you look thin … you look sad, I know something is wrong.

The father-of-two continued, “I told her ‘Mom, I have something to tell you,’ and I told her and she said ‘Oh, okay, thank God for that, I thought you were going blind … those things in your eyes. , that’s okay as long as you’re okay and Steph is okay and the girls are okay. ‘

“My mother suddenly became an incredibly modern, forward-thinking 84-year-old, and we have these amazing, really good, solid conversations … which have worked really well.”
