Five areas have seen another jump in new coronavirus cases in the latest figures released today by the Health Department.
Health officials confirmed that 772 new infections had been reported in the past 24 hours, while sadly six more people died.
The latest announcement was made by Medical Director Dr. Tony Holohan tonight.
Dublin has seen the largest increase in new cases once again with 228, followed by Cork with 120.
While there have been 50 new infections in Meath, 41 in Donegal, 41 in Galway and the remaining 292 cases are spread across all the remaining counties.
As of 2 pm today, 325 Covid-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 42 are in the ICU. There were 15 additional hospitalizations in the last 24 hours.
However, there is good news, as experts confirmed that Ireland’s R-number has now dropped to 1.0.
Professor Philip Nolan, Chairman of NPHET’s Irish Epidemiological Models Advisory Group, said: “The breeding number is now approaching 1.0 nationally.
“This is the first time in several weeks that we have been able to report positive indicators of the disease.
“However, our experience to date shows that this type of progress is very fragile. We must take these positive signals as an indication that our efforts are starting to work, the critical thing now is to maintain it, the virus will look for any opportunity to distribute; over the next few weeks let’s make sure we don’t give him that opportunity, reducing R and case numbers as low as possible “
