Gardaí has upgraded to a murder investigation its investigation into the death of a mother and her two children found dead at their home in Ballinteer, south of Dublin, on Wednesday.

Seema Banu (37), her daughter Asfira Riza (11) and son Faizan Syed (6) were found dead in their home in Llywellen Court on Wednesday afternoon and Gardaí believes they had been dead in the home for several days.

The Garda treated the deaths as “unexplained”, although sources said from the outset that the children were killed and that an autopsy of Ms Banu’s remains would determine how she died.

The Irish Times understands that on Thursday, when initial post-mortem examinations of Ms Banu’s remains were carried out, they were inconclusive.

On Friday, autopsies on the children’s remains confirmed foul play in their deaths, and murder investigations are now underway into their murders, which were by strangulation.

However, the Garda has stopped short of claiming that the three deaths are now being investigated as murders. It is understood that the precise manner of Ms Banu’s death is still under investigation.

Gardaí has confirmed that autopsies were completed and that a murder investigation was underway.

“Following the completion of the post-mortem examinations, gardaí from the Dundrum Garda station has begun a murder investigation into all the circumstances of the events that occurred in a domestic dwelling at Llywellen Court, Ballinteer,” the Garda said in a statement.

He added that details of the autopsies were not being released for operational reasons and that no arrests had been made.

“The Gardaí continues to interview witnesses, conduct extensive door-to-door investigations, and collect and examine all relevant CCTVs,” added the Garda.

“Investigative Gardaí continue to warn that some current misinformed speculation circulating in public does not help this criminal investigation.

“A Garda Síochána has no further comment at this time and a Garda spokesperson is not available.”
