The three members of a family who died in a murder-suicide shooting at their family’s home near Kanturk in North Cork will be buried at two separate funerals in the coming days.
Tadhg O’Sullivan, 59, and his two sons, Mark, 26, and Diarmuid, 23, died Monday in what Gardaí described as “a terrible family tragedy” that has shocked the local community of Castlemagner, near Kanturk.
Gardaí believes that Mark O’Sullivan was shot and killed in his bed in the family home by Diarmuid O’Sullivan or his father or both, apparently as part of a dispute over a will.
The two men then went to a field some distance from the house where they appear to have killed themselves.
All three men are survived by Mr. O’Sullivan’s widow, Ann, described in the death notices as Mr. O’Sullivan’s “heartbroken wife” and Mark and Diarmuid’s “heartbroken mother.”
Tadhg and Diarmuid O’Sullivan will be interred after a private funeral mass for family members at St Mary’s Church in Castlemagner at 2.30pm. Friday and then at St Brigid Cemetery in Castlemagner.
Mark O’Sullivan will be interred following a private funeral mass for family members that will take place at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Kanturk at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, with the burial taking place later at an undisclosed location.
Funerals are conducted in accordance with current HSE and government guidelines on Covid 19.
Mark O’Sullivan’s funeral will be broadcast live.
There are no live streaming facilities at St Mary’s Church in Castlemagner, but members of the local community are expected to pay their respects to Tadhg and Diarmuid O’Sullivan by lining the streets of the village.
The local parish priest, Canon Toby Bluitt, said that the people of Kanturk and Castlemagner parishes expressed their deepest condolences to Ms. O’Sullivan “on the tragic loss of her husband, Tadhg and their children, Mark and Diarmuid.” .
In a notice posted on the parish’s Facebook page, Canon Bluitt said: “We are all shocked and stunned by this heartbreaking news. We pray for the Lord’s comfort for Ann and her family and we pray for God’s mercy for Tadhg, Diarmuid and Mark. Rest in peace.”
Garda investigations into the three murders continue. Garda technical experts are still conducting an examination of the family farm in Assolas between Kanturk and Castlemagner, which is still declared a crime scene.
It is understood that Garda technical experts found correspondence from attorneys at the home confirming reports that there was a dispute between Mark on one side and Mr. O’Sullivan and Diarmuid over a proposed will regarding the 115 acre property .
Ms. O’Sullivan returned to the family home Sunday night with Mark after staying with relatives in Castlemagner for a fortnight after her discharge from the Dublin hospital following surgery for a serious medical condition.
