Jorginho could pay the penalty for missing the penalty

Frank Lampard will speak with his Chelsea players before deciding whether Jorginho continues as his team’s penalty taker.

Jorginho missed his second penalty shot of the season when the Blues defeated Krasnodar 4-0 in Wednesday night’s Champions League clash in Russia.

Timo Werner scored a late penalty, after Jorginho was substituted, but the German forward’s good shot has raised the question of who will be preferred up front.

Callum Hudson-Odoi, Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic found the net as Chelsea took an excellent victory over owner Roman Abramovich.

Lampard insisted he has no qualms about Jorginho’s trademark in the jumped penalty run, but admitted that he will weigh whether the Italian midfielder will keep the Blues’ main functions on penalties.

“Jorginho has had an incredibly successful rate of scoring penalties in his career, particularly at Chelsea,” Lampard said, and Jorginho has now missed twice and scored three from the penalty spot this season.

“My feeling is that when you take as many penalties as he does, there can be periods where you miss one, and sometimes there can be periods where you miss one or two. I experienced it as a player.

“I have no problem with his style of taking them, from the success he has had, and Timo Werner, I know that he is very capable of taking penalties as we saw.

“We have other players who can too, so I’ll talk to the players later to see how we progress. But we have good penalty shooters at the club.”

Chelsea sealed their third consecutive clean sheet on a hugely positive night on the road, leaving Lampard happy, and also hoping that Hudson-Odoi avoided any serious injuries.

The England winger was seen putting ice on his left thigh after being replaced, but Lampard insisted there was no early news of a troubling nature about the 19-year-old.

“I think the goal is clearly going to be good for their confidence,” Lampard said. “There were things I liked about his game today, his desire to run behind defense.

“Sometimes the one-on-one did not go quite well, but I am very happy when you play in the Champions League and score your goal, I know the feeling of confidence it can give you.

“Regarding his injury, they haven’t told me after the game that there is a problem, so I guess and hope there is nothing wrong.”

Krasnodar chief Murad Musayev regretted the late capitulation on his side and insisted that they had stood firm in the early stages.

“I think we played well in the first half and we had some chances, but Chelsea scored a goal that nobody expected,” Musayev said.

“We had chances and at this level you have to write down everything you do. The second goal was easy for them, and then we didn’t have the resources to come back.

“I’m happy with the 75 minutes we played, but you can’t give away a game after a second goal.”
