Covid-19 Ireland: Dr Tony Holohan Says Travel ‘Too Dangerous’ As Christmas Fears Rise

Dr. Tony Holohan said that it is simply “too dangerous” for international travel, wreaking havoc on family members who are trying to plan a Christmas trip.

This has shed cold water on the hopes of family members who plan to soar to the skies and travel home to meet loved ones anytime soon.

Now there are fears that the Medical Director may issue an edict warning against people returning home from abroad for Christmas in the coming weeks.

Dr. Holohan said that he and his advisers have not specifically discussed Christmas yet, but in the meantime, he has firmly ruled out any Halloween celebrations this weekend.

And he said that any international travel is simply off limits under current conditions.

The medical director was speaking when he announced that he had another 5 sad Covid deaths to report.

But there was good news in the number of new cases 720, more than 200 down from the 939 figure on Monday night.

So far 79 deaths from Covid have been reported in October, with 32 of them in nursing homes.

The largest number of cases has been re-registered in Dublin with 228 new cases reported.

There were 130 new cases in Cork, 47 in Galway, 31 in Meath, 27 in Limerick, and the remaining 257 cases are spread across 20 other counties.

Of the cases reported today, 348 are men and 371 women.

65% are under 45 years old and the average age is 32 years.

The total number of infections is now 58,767 since the pandemic began.

Dr. Holohan is against any non-essential international travel, while the Covid numbers remain as high as now.

The CMO was asked about Christmas trips and said: “We have not given any specific consideration to that … but the Government has considered common trips to the eurozone.

“Our advice is one on the risks of non-essential travel out of the country, and the risk is simply too high.”

The medical director also condemned dishonest retailers that opened and offered some limited essentials, such as face masks.

He said they are operating under false pretenses to gain an “unfair advantage.”

Dr. Holohan said: “They are not keeping the spirit of solidarity and I am disappointed.”
