Armed Gardai rush to the Cork supermarket to discover that there has been some confusion

When the report came in of a possible gunman, seen on the roof of a supermarket on the north side of Cork, the Gardai did not hesitate.

Multiple units responded to the sighting, reported in good faith by a member of the public, at Dunnes Stores in Ballyvolane.

However, when units including an Armed Response team quickly arrived and searched the ceiling, they found that the ‘man with a gun’ was actually a maintenance worker with a power plant.

And the teams responding to the alleged firearms incident withdrew quickly after it was established that the only danger posed by the ‘gunman’ was dirt and grime on Dunne’s overhead lights.

Gardai confirmed to the Irish Mirror that they were called to the area Tuesday afternoon, but it turned out to be a false alarm.

A Garda spokesman said: “Gardaí was alerted to an alleged firearm incident at the business premises in Ballyvolane, Co. Cork on Tuesday October 20 at approximately 4.30pm.”

“Several Garda units were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, it turned out that it was a false alarm and there was no firearm.”
