Gardaí in Galway has asked for witnesses after a 15-year-old boy was stabbed in an altercation on the church grounds.

The teenager was injured after being approached by a man unknown to him and an altercation ensued.

The 15-year-old suffered a single stab wound and was transferred to Galway University Hospital. It is understood that his injuries are not life-threatening.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. Monday on the grounds of St Brigid’s Church in Ballybane, east of the city.

Local Councilor Alan Cheevers (FF) said there was a community commotion over the incident.

“I think the injuries are not life threatening, but that does not detract from the seriousness of the incident. You don’t want this kind of thing to happen in any community.

“It’s not just that it happened on church grounds, it could happen anywhere and there is great concern,” he said.

Gardai at Mill Street Station (091-538000) has asked for witnesses.
