Tesco apologized after it mistakenly prevented customers from buying sanitary products as part of the new lockdown measures in Wales.

Yesterday, the Prime Minister of Wales, Mark Drakeford, said that supermarkets have “discretion” over the ban on selling non-essential items during the closure of the firewall in the nation.

However, Welsh customers looking for vintage products said they found the pharmaceuticals area of their local Tesco blocked.

Several customers voiced their complaints on the supermarket’s Twitter account, prompting the company to respond by saying: “We understand how frustrating these changes will be for our Welsh customers.

“However, the Welsh government has told us not to sell these items during the firewall closure.”

The Welsh government later corrected Tesco, tweeting: “This is wrong, vintage products are essential.

“Supermarkets can still sell items that can be sold in pharmacies.

“Selling only essential items through the firewall is to discourage you from spending more time than necessary in stores. It shouldn’t prevent you from accessing the items you need.”

The company has now apologized, adding that the problem was located in a store and is being urgently rectified.

“Of course, medical devices are essential items and are available to customers in all our stores, including those in Wales,” said a spokesperson.

“The response to this customer was sent in error and we are very sorry for the confusion caused.”
