Gardai called numerous outlets over the weekend to ensure they were following coronavirus restrictions.
Stores are allowed throughout Ireland for essential reasons only, so even supermarkets can’t sell things like toys, according to Tanaiste Leo Varadkar.
And Gardai has been visiting stores across the country to verify these rules are being followed.
When sharing photos on their social media, agents visited an unnamed Dunnes store over the weekend and found no violation of the rules there.
A garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí is conducting compliance checks at retail facilities in support of current COVID-19 risk level 5 measures.
“Under current measures, retail businesses can remain open only for essential retail purposes. Working together, we can all make a difference.”
Speaking about these rules on Sunday, Tanaiste Leo Varadkar said: “If you are a mixed retailer you have to separate your stock and sell only the items that are essential. If you are a large store that has groceries and clothes, you have to separate the clothes. general work is fine, but not other clothes.
“We have been in contact with the Garda about that. If they are using PPE to sell other products, then it is different.”
“It’s also unfair, think of all the small stores and retailers that have to close, it’s unfair to them and it won’t be allowed.
“Having collaborated with the Department of Justice, I am confident that the law is strong enough.”
