Gradai in Cork continues to detect a wide range of possible criminal and traffic infractions at checkpoints and through patrols that monitor compliance with Covid-19 restrictions.

In the latest incidents over the weekend, the Cork City Road Police Unit detained and arrested two suspected drunk drivers on suspicion of driving while intoxicated on the M8 on Sunday night.

Gardai in Cork has been putting a lot of effort into Operation Fanacht, with fixed checkpoints, mobile patrols, and random checks on city and county roads over the weekend.

In another incident, Gardai arrested a man in Youghal on Friday night after he turned over a suspicious package that he had hidden in his pants.

A driver, in his late teens, was pulled over at a checkpoint in the city and Gardai said he was acting suspiciously and appeared nervous.

When spoken to, the man handed over 5,000 euros worth of alleged cocaine that he had hidden in his pants.

In recent months, Gardai patrols and checkpoints mounted as part of the force’s comprehensive operations to support efforts by public health officials to contain COVID-19 have detected everything from drug transportation to alleged stolen dogs on our roads.

In the latest phase of these efforts, Operation Fanacht, more than 130 static checkpoints have been established across the country and Gardai will continue to maintain high visibility, in all climates and at all times, on the roads of Cork during the next days.
