RTE viewers cried after Baz Ashmaway’s new show DIY SOS aired its ‘hardest and most heartbreaking’ story yet.
The last episode focused on a young Tipperary family. The widow Sinead and her three young children, Nicole, Rowen and Keeva.
Sinead tragically lost her husband, Michael Barry, who died of cancer just four months after his diagnosis, reports RSVP Live.
The 34-year-old was building himself a beautiful family home on land they bought in 2014 for his wife and children, which was sadly left unfinished.
Sinead said the couple had been “teenage boyfriends and” their goal was to be a father “and” eventually build the house of our dreams together.
Trina, Michael’s sister, contacted the program to try to help. 125 volunteers from all over the country undertook the project and produced the home of their dreams in just 9 days.
“DIY SOS has come and saved us,” Sinead said.
Taking to Twitter to talk about the show, Baz wrote: “Tonight’s EP from #DIYSOSIrl It was one of the most difficult and moving stories I have ever had to be a part of as a presenter.
“If you were a part of this gratitude from the bottom of my heart anyway, you have restored my faith at a time when it would be easy to lose it!
“A lot of people have to deal with the loss of someone who is a beloved and essential part of their family. It’s so fucking unfair.
“I learned a lot from Sinéad Barry. She is such a wonderful mom and such a strong person. I also learned a lot about her husband Michael from all the people in the place.
“What a wonderful man he was and how much his brothers and sister and his entire family loved him. For his beautiful children Nicole, Rowen and baby Keeva.
“He was loved by a community and also by complete strangers. My heart broke for the Barry family. The only respite or remedy was to see the volunteers take responsibility and take responsibility for a family that was devastated and fix things for them only in goodness and love.
“Watching them do this for another man and his family has changed my mind forever. The world is full of wonderful people. Really. I’ve seen it right in front of me.”
Fans of the show inundated Twitter with praise for the amazing young family.
One user wrote: “Life is so precious. I really want to hug Sinead, she is an amazing lady. Michael was so loved and it is beyond devastating what happened to them.”
Another added: “Jesus in 5 minutes and I feel like the wind has been taken from me. That poor family, I am in absolute tears. I hope they do the most incredible work for them and that Michael’s legacy lives on in what will be house of your dreams “.
A third wrote: “Ah jaysus @bazashmawy I’m not crying, you are !!! You are the perfect host for this show. Incredible emotions watching #DIYSOSIRL tonight.”
