The HSE requested almost 7.5 million euros of the recalled hand sanitizer from ViraPro, it has been said.

On Friday night, the Department of Agriculture called for the recall of products from the ViraPro line of hand sanitizers.

This was a precaution due to concerns that inadequate levels of ethanol would render the product ineffective.

The HSE issued a statement to Independent.ie confirming that it had ordered a large batch of the product.

An HSE spokeswoman said: “To date, HSE has received a total of 3,128,876 units from ViraPro worth € 7,447 million (excluding VAT).

“2,092,398 units have been quarantined, which means that 1,036,074 units have been shipped to health services locations.”

The HSE said that the lot represents less than 10 percent of HSE stocks, adding that there is “enough stock available in HSE storage to replace it.”

The HSE has mobilized a recall team that has “quarantined” all stocks currently in the national PPE distribution centers.

A recall notice has been issued for all unused Virapro stock of healthcare locations. The HSE said the notice will help “understand and establish” the amount of product that needs to be “raised and replaced.”

“It is likely that all health care facilities (Agudos and CHO, including GPs, National Ambulance Service) have received actions,” the spokeswoman said.

The recall notice has been sent to all healthcare facilities and the responses received will provide further information.

“The HSE recall team has not been notified of any ill effects from the use of the product,” the spokeswoman added.
