Medical Director Dr. Tony Holohan had a heartfelt message about young people and the toll Covid-19 has taken on their lives.
The chief physician spoke with Ryan Tubridy on the Late Late Show on Friday night, where he said young people have been greatly burdened by the pandemic as the country struggles for a second shutdown.
Speaking to Ryan Tubridy in surprise, Dr. Holohan said: “The burden on them (the youth) has been very significant.
Dr. Holohan went on to talk about his own children and how he understands the challenges the pandemic brings to this age group.
“Mine are 18 and almost 20, so almost everything they do in school, hanging out with friends, hanging out, going to nightclubs, going to the pub and traveling. These are all things they look forward to. Basically being with their friends .
“So they have had to bear a great burden. For young people aged 19-24 it has been really difficult. Their lives have changed in almost every way.
Dr. Holohan went on to explain to Tubridy that while he understands why young people are fed up with the pandemic, he wants to reiterate that the virus can affect not only them, but also the loved ones around them.
He went on to deliver a hopeful message on how to curb the spread of the virus before the Christmas period in December.
Dr. Holohan said that while health chiefs are very concerned about the level of spread of the virus, he gave hope for real changes to occur in the coming weeks.
“That is not to say that at the same time we cannot express some hope and optimism about the probability of changing that situation. We could change that situation very quickly.
“Six weeks seems like a long period of time, and it’s to bear this burden, especially considering what we’ve had to go through.”
