Ireland could receive the first shipment of a Covid-19 vaccine later this year, the Irish Independent has learned.
Pfizer Ireland CEO Paul Reid believes there are strong indications that his company’s experimental jab could be approved for emergency clearance by the end of next month. While a number of hurdles need to be overcome before the vaccine can be implemented, Reid said the company was advancing the clinical trial program at “breakneck speed.”
He said: “We can have 100 million doses by the end of 2020. If we have an advance purchase agreement with the EU Commission that is secured, part of that would include a volume that we believe we can make available across Europe.”
Meanwhile, HSE chief Paul Reid has said a “population distribution” plan is being developed to decide how a potential vaccine will be released here. It comes as fears about the spread of Covid in nursing homes grow and questions have been raised about the test and trace system.
