Dr. Tony Holohan has issued a stern warning for people who expect Christmas to be normal this year.
The Medical Director appeared on the Late Late Show tonight to discuss the country’s precarious position in the fight against the Covid-19 virus.
When asked by host Ryan Tubridy if the hope is that this six-week level 5 lockdown will allow for a relatively normal Christmas with some relaxed restrictions, Tony said this Christmas will certainly be different, no matter how low the incidence rate is.
“Clearly there is going to have to be a change in the way we experience Christmas, like any other time of the year, as long as we have this virus circulating.”
Tony declined to ask Ryan’s question about how many family members we could have around the Christmas table, but said how lenient or strict the restrictions will be if we enter the holiday season with 50 boxes a day or 500 boxes a day. cases.
Parents across the country will also be able to breathe a sigh of relief tonight, as Holohan said the children will return to school after the midterm break, despite rumors to the contrary.
Ryan said: “Some kids today were sent home with their books, and the teachers told them that we may not see them after midterm, it may be longer than that, can you clarify your thoughts on that? ”.
“I certainly do not anticipate that we would be giving any advice that could lead to schools not reopening after midterm. Absolutely.”
Earlier today, Tony announced that there has been a slight drop in daily cases, with 777 more cases confirmed today, but seven additional COVID-19 related deaths.
There have now been a total of 1,878 COVID-19 related deaths in Ireland and a total of 55,261 confirmed cases.
