An urgent recall of more hand sanitizer products was issued after it emerged that they were not on the government-approved list.
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Navy yesterday removed the hand sanitizer product Virapro Hand Sanitiser (PCS 100409) from the Biocidal Products Register and warned that the product should be recalled.
Several Dublin schools were forced to close earlier this week after it became known they were using the product, which could cause multiple problems for students.
Prolonged use of this product may cause dermatitis, eye irritation, upper respiratory irritation, or headaches.
The Department has recalled other products in the Virapro range and has advised people to stop using them immediately.
A spokesperson for the Department said: “In the course of the investigation into this matter, it has emerged that several other Virapro-branded medical devices were not on the Department’s approved list for biocides.”
“The company in question has been advised to withdraw all these products from the market.
“Therefore, the Department advises, as a precaution, that all medical devices in the Virapro range must be returned to the supplier.
“The public is encouraged to stop using these products because they are not authorized for use.
“All medical devices containing biocides must have a clearly visible PCS or an IE / BPA or EU number on the label. A Department investigation into this matter is ongoing. ”
