Serious concerns have been raised around Covid testing after it was revealed that the National Virus Reference Laboratory (NVRL) will not be able to process swabs this weekend.
Sinn Féin TD Louise O’Reilly told the Dáil that she was “very disturbed” to learn that the staff shortage means that Covid testing will not take place.
He said we have been told “repeatedly” that testing is absolutely essential “that it is a vital tool in our battle against this virus.”
“Yesterday I was very upset to receive a notification that was circulated at the National Virus Reference Laboratory, an urgent notification regarding Covid testing at the NVRL due to an inevitable shortage of staff.
The notice states that the NVRL will not be able to provide any Sars-CovV-2 on the weekend of October 24, 25 and 26, and the weekend of October 31 to November 1. We apologize for the delay and any inconvenience. this can cause.
Ms. O’Reilly asked Health Minister Stephen Donnelly if he was aware of this and called him to describe the steps that have been taken to ensure the tests are processed.
“I want to ask what efforts have been made to address the staff shortage, the fact that there is a staff shortage at the National Virus Reference Laboratory I think is very concerning, but I want to know what is being done to ensure that that issue is going to be addressed and the staff is going to be available, “he said.
She said we’ve already seen the “disaster” with the tracking, but said “testing is absolutely essential.”
It comes as a hand sanitizer product used in schools and the healthcare system has been withdrawn from the market due to “potential public health concerns.”
