A hand sanitizer used in schools has been recalled after it has been shown to cause skin problems, headaches and respiratory problems.

The Department of Agriculture says that ‘Viropro Hand Sanitiser’ has been removed from a list of approved products due to “potential public health concerns.”

The Department conducted tests showing that it does not comply with regulations on hand sanitizing products.

In a statement, it says that long-term use of Viropro can cause dermatitis, eye irritation, upper respiratory irritation, and headaches.

The company that makes the product has been told to recall all of its bottles immediately.

According to The Irish Times, the Department of Education has said that all schools should check whether the product has been used at their school and make local arrangements to purchase an alternative hand sanitizer and increase hand washing in the meantime.

The department also said schools can close on Friday or finish early if they deem it necessary.

They added: “Additional funds will be provided to schools so that they can purchase necessary supplies from an alternative supplier.”

The Department of Agriculture has also said that an investigation is underway on the product.
