Tonight another 1,066 cases of coronavirus have been announced, while sadly three deaths have been announced.

The figures were announced by the National Public Health Emergency Team tonight.

They come when the level five lockdown restrictions went into effect this morning.

Stores across the country are closing their doors, while pubs, restaurants and cafes won’t just be able to serve takeout online.

A strict 5km travel limit has also been imposed in an attempt to encourage people to stay home as much as possible.

The tough restrictions are set to last for six weeks in an attempt to stem the recent escalation of Covid-19 cases.

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly warned today that Ireland could move out of Level Five restrictions region by region.

The Health Minister’s comments raise the possibility that some counties may be stuck in Level Five, with the strictest level of restrictions, until well into December.

Donnelly said that Ireland’s way out of Level Five “will depend on what the situation is.

“The Government and NPHET will look closely at it and look at a variety of factors.

“They look at the level of cases, the growth rate of the cases, the positivity rates, the R number and they also look at it county by county and region by region.”

Covid-19 rates have varied wildly in different parts of the country in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Taoiseach Micheal Martin issued a meaningful appeal to the public last night before the introduction of new restrictions.

“We will get over it and see each other again,” the Taoiseach wrote on Twitter.

With nearly all workers now being asked to stay home and non-essential retail stores closed, Mr. Martin urged the public to “remember that we are doing this to protect our families and the most vulnerable in our lives. communities “.
