Taoiseach Micheal Martin makes a heartfelt plea to the public as Ireland begins the second lockdown

The Taoiseach has sincerely called on the public to obey the new Level Five restrictions.

Ireland began its second national blockade at midnight, with the introduction of a series of new measures.

Almost all workers have been told to stay home and can only meet one person from another household in an outdoor location, where social distancing can be maintained.

All non-essential shops, along with bars, restaurants, cafes, gyms, hair salons and barbers are closed, while people must limit their movements to less than 5 km from home.

The government is also introducing various fines for those caught breaking the strict new rules.

But speaking last night, Taoiseach Micheal Martin pleaded with everyone to abide by the new guidelines and reminded people “why are we doing this.”

He tweeted: “Tonight, as we think about the next six weeks of increased restrictions at Level 5, we just need to remember that we are doing this to protect our families and the most vulnerable in our communities.

“We will get over it and we will meet again.”

Although we are entering a second closure, schools will remain open.

This is despite the fact that the number of cases in schools almost doubles in a week and almost quadruples in a fortnight.

The latest HSE statistics reveal that 384 schools have been evaluated since they reopened in early September.

There were 46 outbreaks in schools in the week ending October 17, last Saturday, compared to 25 the week before and 12 the week before again.

There have been a total of 119 outbreaks in all since the decision was made to reopen the country’s schools last month.

The positive detection rate is lower in schools, just under 2%, compared to 7% in the general community.
