A former cabinet minister told Fine Gael’s parliamentary meeting tonight that he cannot support any measure to fine people who violate the 5km restrictions that will be introduced at midnight.
Michael Ring said that 5km was a very small distance in rural Ireland and that it was not practical to enforce this limit, especially during the dark winter months.
The TD de Mayo told his colleagues that he feared the country would become a police state.
However, Ring has indicated that it will vote in favor of blanket legislation that will allow people to be fined who do not adhere to other Level 5 restrictions.
He also said that the state expected people to follow its rules but cannot own their own home to cite problems with contact tracing in particular.
Tánaiste Leo Varadkar told the same meeting that the first thing he heard about the tracking problems was Tuesday night.
He also said that it was unfair of HSE to place this burden on GPs and it is something they have done in the past as well.
At tonight’s Fianna Fáil parliamentary party meeting, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly insisted the contact tracing system had not collapsed.
However, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said he was dissatisfied with the current system and that work was being done to establish a strong permanent contact tracing staff.
