Gardai is calling on members of the public to be vigilant following the seizure of stolen catalytic converters at the Limerick-Tipperary border.

Gardaí from the new Theft Response Unit in Tipperary was on patrol in the Cappawhite area when they pulled over a van around 7 p.m. last Saturday.

“Gardaí conducted a search of the van and discovered 16 catalytic converters and five car batteries worth approximately 3,000 euros. Gardaí believes these items may have been stolen and were seized pending further investigation,” said a spokesman. of the Garda.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

Sgt Tom O’Dwyer, Tipperary Division Crime Prevention Officer, said: “This year there has been an increase in theft of catalytic converters. Palladium, which is found in catalytic converters, is priced high and is driving this trend, urged to park their cars in safe and well-lit areas, and report any suspicious activity to their local gardaí ”.

Anyone who has had a catalytic converter or any other part of their vehicle stolen, is urged to report the theft to their local garda station.
