Tipperary U20 1-19 Clare U20 0-12

Irish champion Tipperary edged Clare in the second half of the Munster U-20 Hurling Championship quarter-finals at Thurles’ Semple Stadium in rain.

Tipp, firm favorites, took time to exercise his authority.

Clare was the sharpest team in the first half, especially in the second quarter.

The teams were tied 0-05 apiece at the breakwater, but then the visitors, with Cian Galvin and Mark Rodgers leading the way, scored four unanswered points from Rodgers (2), Galvin and Robin Mounsey to lead 0-10 to 0 – 06 at break.

The champions seemed to have problems, but they transformed in the second half.

Conor Bowe was the star of the show, hitting five of Tipp’s six points as they advanced 0-11 to 0-10 in the 38th minute.

In the second water break, the hosts were 0-13 to 0-10 ahead, a seven-point change as Clare failed to score in that period.

In the fourth quarter, Tipp added four points before Banner’s men scored their first touchdown of the second half, a point from Galvin from a free in the 56th minute.

Another point from Rodgers hinted at a Clare resurgence, but this was spoiled when the Premier’s men were awarded a penalty after Andrew Ormond was fouled and Devon Ryan scored in the 59th minute.

Tipp now faces Waterford in the Munster semi-final.

His second-half performance was impressive with Bowe, an inspiring figure who threw a total of seven points in the game.

Ormond, who limped out of the game at the end, Kevin McCarthy, Eoghan Connolly and Ray McCormack were others to turn heads.

Clare’s collapse in the second half was surprising, as they seemed capable of surprising beforehand.

Galvin, Rodgers, Paddy Donnellan and Darragh Lohan were his best performers.
