A Garda Síochána will conduct an investigation after a senior official who attended a press conference earlier today subsequently tested positive for Covid-19.

In a statement, he said he can confirm that a member of the force who was present at the briefing received notification of a positive test result shortly thereafter.

It is understood that the officer was waiting for the Covid-19 test result when he attended the event.

Current health guidelines state that a person should continue to isolate themselves while waiting for test results.

The statement said that all An Garda Síochána members are expected to fully comply with the Health Services Executive’s guidelines.

He said the force is in contact with all members of the media who attended the event to inform them of the positive test and relevant public health councils.

The statement said the HSE guidelines, supported by internal guidance from its medical director, have been distributed to all staff members on numerous occasions.

He said An Garda Síochána will not provide comment on the individual status of any member of the force or individual Garda stations.

He said measures were implemented at the press conference in relation to social distancing and masks.

Earlier this month, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris had to restrict his movements after contact with a Garda officer who subsequently tested positive for Covid-19.

Last week in Kerry, District Court sessions were canceled for several days after a member of the force who had Covid-19 attended court in Tralee.
