A man who lives in the same Vatican residence as Pope Francis tested positive for Covid-19 and isolated himself, the Vatican revealed.

The man, who was not identified and had no symptoms of the disease, left the Santa Marta residence and isolated himself along with other people with whom he had direct contact, according to a statement.

Someone else living in the residence, which has around 130 rooms and suites, tested positive for the coronavirus when the pandemic struck Italy in March.

Pope Francis, who had part of a lung removed during illness as a young man in his native Argentina, is regularly tested for Covid-19.

Today he had a normal schedule, receiving three people in separate private audiences and addressing a large group of Italian policemen.

The Vatican, a small city-state surrounded by Rome, has been mildly affected by the coronavirus, with some two dozen confirmed cases in total.

Three Vatican residents who tested positive recently have recovered, added Saturday’s statement.

Four members of the Swiss Guard, the elite and ornately dressed body that protects the Pope, tested positive for Covid-19 last week.
