WEATHER
Saturday it will bring a lot of dry weather across the country, but there will be passing rains, especially in the east. A fair amount of cloudiness overall, but some periods of sunshine to be expected. Later in the day, a thicker cloud will bring bouts of rain to the extreme southwest. Higher temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees in mostly moderate easterly winds, increasing at cool times in the southwest.
Sunday It will be quite cloudy with rain or showers at times. The rain became persistent later Sunday, particularly along the southern coastal counties. Temperatures will range between 11 and 13 degrees during the afternoon. For more information, visit met.ie
Where once there was hope, now I’m not so sure
And so we return. We wait. The increasing numbers and the real prospect of Level 5 restrictions put things in doubt.
On May 1, then-Taoiseach Leo Varadkar was hoping for a GAA championship to be held. A reduction in Covid numbers and the start of the club fee across the country gave hope that we would indeed have a run before Christmas for provincial and all-Ireland honors.
We are not so sure now, given the increasing numbers across the island. The second wave has arrived.
A cancellation of the GAA championships, if it were to happen, would make it highly unlikely that it could be organized sometime in 2021. Leagues are more likely to be completed in the first few months of next year if fouls are committed. of greater restrictions.
Decisions, no doubt for the intermediaries in Croke Park, in conjunction with the Government and the health authorities.
For now, the games go on.
DIVISION 1
What we do know is that Meath is relegated. May, if he loses to Galway in Tuam, will be in danger of ending his long tenure in the top flight.
As for Padraig Joyce’s Tribsemen, well, they were the most striking before closing. Last weekend Jim Guinness gave some advice before the restart. It’s not clear if it was just one time, but Joyce, a former Donegalman varsity teammate, told TG4: “He’s the best performance coach out there in the country. He’s been there and he’s done it and he’s very relevant. to GAA as we know it.
“He has won All-Ireland as a coach. It was a perfect fit and a no-brainer for me to be honest with you.”
With Galway seeking a first National League title in 39 years, Joyce will have to plan without players from the Moycullen County champions after confirmed cases of Covid-19 at the club.
GALWAY XV
Of course, Galway-Mayo could be a dress rehearsal for the Connacht final on November 15, and the Donegal-Tyrone clash on the banks of the Finn River is the appetizer for the Ulster quarterfinals. League points, however, will be crucial for both of them if Mayo gets the loot at Tuam.
Relegation concerns will also worry Monaghan if they come off useless from their Inniskeen vs. Kerry match.
DIVISION 2
The Armagh v Roscommon winner will secure a Division 1 ticket for next year.
In the lead up to the restart, much attention was paid to Fermanagh’s request to the Central Committee for Control of Competitions (CCCC) to postpone his game with Clare on the grounds that 10 players tested positive for coronavirus and seven other panel members. in isolation. Many of those players will only come out of self-isolation the morning of the playoff at Ennis.
The Ernesiders could produce a team with multiple players under the age of 20 included, knowing that a loss would leave them relegated.
Jack O’Connor won’t want to face a relegation fight in his first year in charge of Kildare. Cavan’s date in Newbridge should be spicy, as should Westmeath and Laois’s meeting in Mullingar.
DIVISION 3
Cork’s quick escape from the third tier should settle for a win over Louth, a result that would see Wee County relegated. After that, the Rebels’ focus will be on a Munster semifinal against Kerry. A match they have been planning all year.
However, Ciarán Sheehan will not be involved after undergoing knee surgery.
The 29-year-old returned to the Rebels’ fold earlier this year after spending six years in Australia after his hopes of becoming an AFL regular with Carlton were mainly hampered by injury.
After some impressive early starts in the league before the lockout, Sheehan was thought to lead the Cork line, but knee surgery means he won’t be around.
Rebel chief Ronan McCarthy must also plan without Tomas Clancy after Fermoy’s man ripped his calf and damaged his Achilles tendon on club duty earlier this month.
Down and Longford appear ready to challenge for the remaining promotional spot. The Mornemen, on paper, look to have the easiest assignment this weekend, when they face Leitrim at home, while the midlanders are out of Derry.
The result of the Tipperary-Offaly tie should give us a somewhat clearer, though not definitive, view of who else can face the slide to the bottom.
DIVISION 4
Due to coronavirus restrictions, London is no longer involved, but five teams are still in the running for promotion. That number could drop after this round of games, as Limerick hosts Wexford, now minus Paul Galvin. Wicklow welcomes Antrim to Aughrim, while former Sligo boss Niall Carew now takes over for Carlow, who welcomes the Yeatsmen to Cullen Park.
