Two men were arrested this morning in connection with a shooting in July.

Thomas McCarthy was shot up to eight times after opening the door to his mother’s home in Croftwood Park in Ballyfermot, Dublin, around 11am on Monday, July 27, 2020.

The father and grandfather are believed not to have been involved in the crime and were attacked by a lone hitman after being dragged into a personal dispute.

The two men, aged between 30 and 20, were arrested this morning under the provisions of section 42 of the Criminal Justice Act 1999 and are currently being detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 in Lucan and Clondalkin Garda stations. Gardai said.

McCarthy had only returned to his family’s Croftwood Park home a week before the brutal murder.

He had been living in Southend on Sea in England, where he had raised a family.

On his home visit, he is believed to have been involved in a dispute involving someone he knew who was assaulted by a violent local criminal.

It was also learned that the killer used three separate getaway cars in the blatant killing in broad daylight.

The shooter headed for the attack and sped away from the scene in a blue Ford Fiesta that he abandoned just minutes away on Le Fanu Drive in Ballyfermot.

He started the car and got into a second getaway vehicle, a silver Skoda Octavia, which had been left there as part of the planned coup.

The gunman drove the Skoda another short distance to the nearby Monksfield area of Clondalkin, where it was also abandoned and set on fire, before leisurely driving away.

A third vehicle was also seen acting suspiciously around the corner from where the killer left the Skoda, and was later found burned.

A black Toyota Avensis with registration number 10-D-123251 was spotted in the vicinity of Woodford Walk between 10.57am and 11.06am.

The car was later discovered burned out on Peamount Road, Newcastle, Co. Dublin at 9:30 pm.
