Milk sold in popular supermarkets in Ireland has been urgently recalled due to possible bacterial contamination.

The Food Safety Authority (FSA) issued a recall for lots of Arrabawn milk that are potentially unsafe due to the presence of Enterobacteriaceae bacteria.

Enterobacteriaceae are a group of bacteria, some of which can be harmful to humans.

The bacteria test is used as an indicator of process failure and / or contamination after processing food processed with heat or poor hygiene.

However, the test itself does not confirm the presence of harmful bacteria.

Retailers have been told to remove the involved lots from the shelves and display a notice where the affected lots were sold.

The affected milk batches were sold at Spar, Aldi, Gala and Mace, as well as other stores.

Consumers have been told not to drink the batches involved and caterers have also been told not to use the milk.

The affected batches are Arrabawn Fresh Milk 2L, Homefarm Fresh Milk 2L, Gala Fresh Milk 2L, Spar Fresh Milk 2L, Mace Fresh Milk 2L, Conbawn Fresh Milk 2L and 3L, all with an expiration date of 10/26.

Clonbawn Light 1% fat 1L and 3L milk with an expiration date of 10/27 has also been recovered.
