PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP has delivered some of his most outspoken blows to Dr. Anthony Fauci, America’s leading infectious disease expert, while campaigning in North Carolina.
President Trump is defending his administration’s response to the pandemic, as he usually does at rallies.
It offered a reminder that Dr. Fauci at one point said that people shouldn’t wear a mask.
The doctor has said that one of the first recommendations about not wearing a mask was because at that time there was a shortage of personal protective equipment for health professionals.
Since then he has called for the use of a universal mask.
President Trump called Dr. Fauci a good guy, “so I keep him close.”
But he also described Dr. Fauci, the government’s leading infectious disease expert, as a Democrat.
“Everyone knows that. He’s a friend of Cuomo,” said President Trump, referring to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Dr. Fauci has been carefully apolitical during a five-decade career in public health.
The doctor has expressed dismay that the president used his comments in a campaign ad and says his comments were taken out of context.
