Ireland’s top professor has issued a stern warning as the country could see thousands of cases a day before Halloween.
Professor Philip Nolan said the number of daily cases could be between 1,800 and 2,500 cases, as there has been a massive jump in cases in recent weeks.
He said at the NPHET briefing tonight: “The number of reproduction appears to have increased and is now 1.4 nationally.
“The model shows that if current trends continue, by October 31, the number of cases reported daily would be in the range of 1,800 to 2,500 cases with more than 400 people in the hospital.”
A total of 1,205 new cases of COVID-19 have been recorded in Ireland in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections to 46,429.
In addition, three more lives have sadly been lost to the deadly virus, as the death toll stands at 1,838.
Of the cases reported today;
- 614 are men and 590 are women
- 71% are under 45
- Average age is 34
- 288 are in Dublin, 173 in Cork, 123 in Meath, 97 in Galway, 63 in Cavan and the remaining 461 cases are distributed in the remaining counties
Dr. Colm Henry, HSE Clinical Director, added: “The challenge we have now is much greater than at the beginning of this year as we are trying to suppress COVID-19 while maintaining our non-COVID services and providing environments safe in our acute patients settings.
“The greater the community transmission, the more difficult it will be to protect medically vulnerable people in all healthcare settings. We call on everyone to get involved in protecting patients, healthcare workers and frontline services. “
