Gardaí has issued a request for information in connection with the murder of a baby whose body was found in a shopping bag in a lane in Dún Laoghaire in 1973.

Baby Noeleen Murphy was stabbed more than 40 times when she was one day old at a home at White’s Villas in Dalkey in April of that year.

His mother has also urged people to come forward.

Cynthia Owen has always said it was her mother who killed the baby

This is the first time that gardaí has made a public call for information in the investigation of the murder of baby Noeleen.

Owen gave birth to their daughter when she was 11 years old.

She grew up in an abusive home with violent and dysfunctional parents and said her mother had killed her daughter.

The baby’s body was later found by two children in a shopping bag.

Initial investigation of the garda was flawed and evidence was lost.

No DNA was taken and the case was effectively closed after several weeks.

He was subsequently examined by the Garda’s “unsolved cases” unit and a new team in Dún Laoghaire pursued a series of lines of investigation.

That investigation is still open.

Detective Superintendent Martin Creighton said all lines of investigation have been exhausted and that a file on the murder, as well as files in relation to other allegations surrounding the home in Dalkey, were sent to the Director of Public Prosecution, but not resulted in prosecution.

Baby Noeleen’s mother later married and now lives in the UK.

Owen welcomed today’s development and said there are people who have information that can advance the investigation.

Anyone with information can contact the Dún Laoghaire Garda station at 01-666 5000, the confidential Garda line at 1800 666111.
