A 26-YEAR-OLD man was arrested on suspicion of impersonating a police officer after an off-duty officer reported that he was pulled over by a vehicle believed to be a police car in Northern Ireland.

The incident happened on the M1 towards Portadown around 1 a.m.

Once the officer stopped his vehicle on the shoulder, the driver of the ‘police car’, an unmarked gray Skoda Superb, with license plate FT62 CEX, which had been fitted with blue flashing lights, presented an identification card and declared that the off-duty officer had driven too fast.

Acknowledging that the identification card was not a legitimate PSNI warrant card, the officer got out of his car and challenged the man, who immediately sped off.

The suspect was later located in the Bluestone Hall area of Craigavon and arrested. A homemade PSNI identity card was found inside the vehicle.

“We are concerned about this incident and would like to hear from anyone who believes they may have encountered this man while pretending to be a police officer,” said Chief Inspector Barney O’Connor.

“We think this may not be the first time you’ve done this and you were just unlucky enough to have been stopped by a police officer,” O’Connor said.

The man is described as white, approximately 5’9 ″ tall, of medium build, with brown hair and blue eyes. He spoke with a Polish accent.

Anyone who believes they have had any contact with this person or their vehicle should contact the PSNI by calling 101, citing reference 44 of October 14, 2020.
