Three residents of a Laois nursing home have died after contracting Covid-19, while a fourth has been hospitalized.

The heartbreaking news emerged from the Kilminchy Lodge Nursing Home in Portlaoise on Monday morning, after an outbreak of 31 cases was confirmed there last week.

There has been no increase in the number of positive cases, with a second round of testing conducted on October 8, the results of which were returned two days later and identified no further infections.

A spokesperson said the nursing home continues to receive support from public health authorities and is working closely with HIQA and HSE.

Two of the deaths occurred inside the home itself, and the local coroner was notified.

The third person died at the General Hospital of Portlaoise.
