Sean Doyle, current Chairman and CEO of Aer Lingus, will become the new CEO of British Airways, succeeding Alex Cruz. Donal Murphy, current director of corporate affairs for Aer Lingus, will now assume the highest position in the airline.

In a statement Monday, IAG, which owns Aer Lingus and British Airways, said Cruz has resigned after four and a half years in office.

IAG CEO Luis Gallego said: “We are going through the worst crisis facing our industry and I am confident that these internal promotions will ensure that IAG is in a good position to emerge in a strong position.

“I want to thank Alex for everything he has done at British Airways. He worked tirelessly to modernize the airline in the years leading up to its centennial celebration.

“Since then, he has led the airline through a particularly demanding period and has secured restructuring agreements with the vast majority of employees.”

From Cork, Doyle worked with British Airways for nearly 20 years from 1998, in a variety of financial, strategic, commercial and alliance roles, culminating in his appointment to the airline’s executive management committee in 2016 as network director, fleet and alliances. He became CEO of Aer Lingus, owned by IAG, in January 2019.

In assuming the highest position at BA, Doyle is following in the footsteps of another Irish aviation leader Willie Walsh, who led Aer Lingus and BA prior to taking command of IAG, at the time of its inception in 2011.

Aer Lingus’ new CEO, Donal Moriarty, is a qualified attorney and joined the airline as the company’s secretary in 2009, before being appointed director of corporate affairs in November 2017.
