Jim McGuinness, Ireland’s winning coach, took part in his first training session with the Galway footballers today in what is believed to be an “informal arrangement” with the county.
McGuinness, who led Donegal to the success of Sam Maguire in 2012, was seen putting Pádraig Joyce’s team to the test at Tuam Stadium today as members of the tribe prepare for the upcoming Allianz League matches against Mayo and Dublin and a Connacht Championship clash with Sligo on November 7.
McGuinness and Joyce were Sigerson Cup teammates with Tralee IT in their victorious 1999 campaign.
RTÉ Sport understands that there is no formal agreement for McGuinness to join the backroom team, but he is expected to help out for the remainder of the campaign.
McGuinness resigned as Donegal boss in 2014 after leading them to two Ireland finals, including a 2012 win over May, and three Ulster titles in a four-year span.
Naomh Conaill’s man then turned his attention to soccer and joined Celtic in Scotland, before spending time in China and the United States as a coach.
